The pace with which Brisbane / Byron Bay three-piece Moreton have been able to establish themselves as a truly unique voice in Australian music has been simultaneously rapid and inspiring.
Upon the release of their captivating debut single ‘The Water’ midway through 2016, they were instantly recognized by national radio and online tastemakers as a rock act whose music flowed at its own pace; whose earnest lyrics explored the dark depths few were prepared to peer into; and who possessed a tone and musicianship marked by an undeniably stirring voice, pitted against reverb drenched and hook laden guitar melodies and the minimalist triumph of the band’s rhythm section.
Featuring front woman and guitarist Georgia, along with the rhythm section of drummer Myka and bassist Lee – through ‘The Water’ Moreton won the praise of triple j, Rolling Stone and The Music, building up a steady head of steam as they careened towards the release of their debut EP, Specimen in October of that year. The EP’s striking recording was largely performed live with only vocal overdubs – the band working with renowned Brisbane producer Matt Redlich (Holy Holy, Emma Louise) again emphasizing their skill and the mysterious and haunting tone that set them apart.
They followed that with the release of commanding singles ‘Johana’ and ‘Specimen,’ as well as visually striking videos for both that played into the distinct narrative and oeuvre the band were forming around their early career.
A triumphant showing at that year’s Bigsound festival drew critical praise, followed by their first east coast tour of Australia, which provided national audiences their first experience of the band’s imposing live performance ability.
The success of these shows reached Irish heavyweight James Vincent McMorrow personally, who reached out to request the trio open for a run of shows in Australian theatres in early 2017 – the perfect way to ring in a new year packed with huge possibilities and comprehensively earned high expectations.
